My opinion

A fantastic bat for the price. The quality of the willow is the same quality as is being used on some GM original cricket bats which are more than double the price. Its over all a very good bat. Good quality willow, good finish, good balance ( 1 or 2 ), pretty good ping and nice willow. Oh and best of all is the price at only $179

We Like

– The finish
– The quality of the willow and the price

We Dislike

– Not much for $179. you cant go wrong, maybe predictable shape.

Cricket bat face off results

So after a very successful video cricket bat face off. over 250 views in the first 12 hours its time to reveal the winners and losers of the cricket bat face off. Please remember i have tried to be as unbiased as possible and am gauging the comments of 3 other people in this test as well. From comments and conversations had with the people who helped me do the cricket bat review and also from watching the video.

The 5 cricket bats that were involved in the cricket bat face off are:

Vindico Genghis players+ cricket bat

USSZ Zafar Asim cricket bat

Crictech Mellet signature cricket bat

Lekka RDX Envy cricket bat

Lekka TPX big hitter cricket bat

So lets start with the bats.

The Vindico Genghis players + cricket bats

Specifications

Origin: India
Wood: Grade 1 English willow
Sizes Available: SH
Weight Guide: 2lb 8oz-3lb+
Sample Weight: 2lb 10
Handle: round
Edge (at widest): 33mm
Finish: Natural
Toe Protection: Yes

My opinion

I like the bat, its traditional shaping ( like the GM flare ) and the ping and performance was superb. As you saw from my video review its probably the best Pinging bat ive tested in a long time. I like the fact that Vindico is a very small company, two friends living in america sourcing their bats from a big bat maker in india and making it their own. Their original sticker designs and concept are fresh and inspiring. A solid bat that will score many runs for season to come.

We Like

– The simple, functional design
– The edges. Big but not too big, and the logo detail is a nice touch
– The forgiving middle

We Dislike

– Overall quality of the willow aesthetics let the bat down a little but the ping and performance grading makes up for it.

USSZ Zafar asim cricket bat

Specifications

Wood: Grade 1 English willow
Sizes Available: SH but custom bats are available
Weight Guide: 2lb 8oz-3lb+
Sample Weight: 2lb 10
Handle: round
Edge (at widest): 34.5mm
Finish: polycoat
Toe Protection: No

My opinion

Looks to be a good cricket bat. The performance has turned out to be excellent and people who use these bats are very impressed. The finish and stickering leaves a bit to be desired. I would say the finish on these bats is similar to that of an SS or CA cricket bat. Its acceptable but nothing special. This is overall a good performing bat and i like it.

We Like

– Very simple design, a  lot like the Ihsan inferno 950, nothing flashy but effective

We Dislike

– got two pressure dings on the toe, seems not to be pressed properly or may need to spend more time than usual knocking the bat in.

The stickers are also lame.

My opinion

I love the bat, its custom designed for me and i feel like a kid again. ive seen thousands of bats come my way the last two years and only once or twice have i had the feeling about a bat like this. Its beautiful. Its like the Ferrari ive always wanted.

We Like

– The simple stickers that allow you to see all of the wood.
– The edges. Big but not too big, and the logo detail is a nice touch
– huge double middle allowing me to have meat on the front foot shots as well as on the back foot. Its custom designed just for me and you feel great confidence when stepping into your shots.

We Dislike

– The willow was a little dry but that adds to the superb pickup, so maybe im just being picky here.

Sample Weight: 2lb 10
Handle: Oval
Edge (at widest): 31mm

My opinion

A very impressive looking bat. The fact that its made by Tim Keeley speaks volumes about the build quality. A very impressive 17 close grains help you to be impresed with the bat. Overall now after using it in the nets it would be sad to have to sell this bat on to someone else.

We Like

– Simple traditional design but also with a slight concave of the spine to help with the superb balance

We Dislike

– The polycoat, i like my bats to have a natural finish to them

Not a lot of wow factor with this bat

So i guess by now you are pretty anxious to find out how these bats did in the cricket bat face off right?

if you haven’t seen the face off, i will post a link at the bottom of this blog.

Out of the five bats i have rated them along with the help of my fellow bat testers. thanks to them for their help. The scoring categories are :

First impression ( what do you feel as you take it out the box )

Feel / balance / pickup ( no explanation necessary )

Performance ( does the ball fly off the bat )

Most indestructible ( came out the least scathed or damaged )

Best Ping ( how does it feel & sound coming off the bat when you middle it )

For each appearance in a category the bat will get one point. The bat that scores in the top three of each category the most will be the winner and the coveted title of our favorite bat.

Please remember, these bats are all quality bats, and even though they may not score it doesn’t mean its not a good bat. I was impressed with every single one of these bats and would gladly use any one of them in a match.

The bats are listed in no particular order and listed as the top 3 and not 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

First impression top 3 : Lekka TPX / Crictech / Vindico

Feel / balance / pickup top 3 : Crictech / Lekka TPX / Lekka RDX

Performance : Lekka TPX / Crictech / USSZ

Most indestructible bats : Lekka RDX / Lekka TPX / Vindico

Best Ping : USSZ / Vindico / Crictech

So the scores are :

Lekka RDX Envy : 2

USSZ custom : 2

Vindico : 3

Crictech : 4

Lekka TPX big hitter : 4

So yes, its a tie for first place. Both the crictech bat and the Lekka TPX big hitter are superb cricket bats and anyone would be happy to buy them. Both have what all bats need. Great balance and pickup & superb performance. Ultimately those two factors to me are what matter with a cricket bat.

Congratulations to both Companies and i wish all of them great success in the future.

In january i am trying to put together another face off with the worlds bets 20/20 cricket bats.

Here is the video of the face-off if you haven’t seen it yet.

Please feel free to leave me some comments and opinions.

Lekka TPX Big hitter cricket bat

Lekka TPX Big hitter cricket bat

So this is my video, and blog review of the very exciting and ground breaking Lekka TPX Big hitter cricket bat.

You dont have to look at this profile twice to see its an awesome looking cricket bat. The handle is 2″ longer than normal making the blade obviously 2″ shorter. The benefit this gives you is quicker bat speed. Quicker bat speed gives you more power transfer to the ball meaning if you time the swing right you should be able to hit the ball further than with a normal cricket bat. So, if you are the type of person like me, who on occasion gets caught out on the boundary then maybe this bat is for you.

As im sure you can imagine i see a lot of cricket bats come across my path so when there is something different and unique i tend to get a bit excited. Excited is maybe an understatement. This bat is a big deal. A big enough deal that i actually bought this one for myself and plan on using it in my next cricket match.

Here is a quick video from youtube of some guys using the bat and hitting some huge sixes with it.

Note from the video that there is new branding in place for the US market. The Envy as mentioned in the video is the regular bat and the TPX is the Big hitter cricket bat.

For more information and purchasing please click here.

I have also put this bat through my cricket store online scoring system and this is how it shaped up against other bats.

Score :

1: price. 7/10

2: willow. 8/10

3: finish. 9/10

4: performance. 8/10

5: wow. 5/5

6: moisture. 4/5  (9%)

Final score. 42/50

Comments.

Overall so far i am really impressed with this bat. the balance is superb, its exciting and yet also it feels comfortable in your hands. Bowlers are sure to be worried when you come to the crease with this monster. The price is on the high side at $369 but remember you can get two bats at a discounted price in my Lekka cricket bat deal. Saving you about $80 on the two bats. The edges on this bat are massive at 35mm and the profile will scare off any bowler. Hit this baby any near the middle and people cars in the parking lot will need to take cover.

I did another video a few days ago and thought i should put that in here as well.

Ok, i think ive hopefully covered everything there is to know about this bat in the text above and the photos and the three videos. Please contact me on jason@cricketstoreonline.com for more information.

Crictech custom made cricket bats

Crictech custom made cricket bats

So a few weeks ago i started with this series of blogs about crictech custom made cricket bats. Well im pleased to announce i have the cricket bat, have knocked it in and am taking it to the nets this evening. Not only will it be me using the bat but also two USA national team players. Crictech have told me they may not like the bat as the bat is custom designed for me but thats ok. Im keen to get their impressions of the idea and what they think of the process of using the hotspot impact marker sheets.

To purchase and find out more about crictech, click here.

My initial impression of the bat when i opened the box was Wow, my very first, personally designed, custom made cricket bat.

It took me a little while for the stickers to grow on me and now when i look at it i like it more and more. There is just something special about owning a custom made bat that no other big brand out there can offer. Without a doubt of all the bats i now own as a cricket store owner, this crictech custom is my favorite. Other bats i have may be better, may have bigger meat, bigger sweetspots, bigger edges etc etc etc, but this one is my favorite and is probably the only bat i own that is not for sale. ( except also maybe the bat i scored my first 100 with. )

The balance on the bat is as good as its gets. It weighs about 2-3 oz heavier than it ctually feels. The pickup is very light. The bat is aggressive with powerful edges and a slight concave on the back profile. It has a slight bow to the face of the bat and the entire package comes together very nicely.

The whole process came together from order placement to bat in my hands in less that a month and Richard from crictech says the bats can be made in as little as 15 days. Thats pretty impressive considering you wait about 5 weeks for a laver and wood.

I remember when waiting for this bat i was like a little boy again waiting for a christmas present. Since i started this company two years ago i haven’t had that feeling for new gear coming in as i see hundreds of cricket bats come and go through my store.  And thats what makes crictech special. They really are offering you that special feeling again when buying a cricket bat. Its an extension of your arms, your sword as you go into battle and it may even save your life as you protect your body against rib tingling snorters.

If you are in the market for a new bat i suggest you think about crictech, no kit is complete till you have your own custom made cricket bat.

USSZ Zafar Asim custom made cricket bats ( made in the USA )

USSZ Zafar Asim custom made cricket bats ( made in the USA )

Yip, you read it correctly, made in the USA.  The story of Zafar Asim is that he learnt his trade in the UK, then travelled to australia where he worked for Impala cricket. He has since moved to southern california where he now works as a groundsman and custom bat maker.

My initial impression of the bat was not very impressed. The stickers are not that great, neither flashy, nor classy. But and let me say that again, BUT the bat is a very good performer. The bat is designed to match the Ihsan inferno 950 exactly. ( thats my opinion ) if you hold the two bats next to each other you couldn’t tell the difference. chances are though that this bat is better than the inferno. I used it in the nets and was blown away. The middle is the same size as any other bat but when you do hit it in the middle it flies off the bat. Its not like GM bats either that you need a few games to play it in before it opens up. It goes like a  “screaming cat ” right from the first ball. I didn’t even have to knock it is. ( whilst that is always recommended )

The bat came with a round handle, and a poly coat but had some cheap form of mesh resin toe guard. Probably lose a few points for that as all bats these days should have a toe guard i feel. bats are not cheap and toe guards will help the bat last a little longer.

On the cricket store online scoring system this is how it fared.

Score :

1: price. 7/10

2: willow. 8/10

3: finish. 6/10

4: performance. 9/10

5: wow. 3/5

6: moisture. 3/5

Final score. 36/50

Comments.

The bat has 34.5 mm edges, is $300 – $400 and weighs 2.10. whilst its loses points for the look, moisture content and finish its scored as high as any top bat on the performance scale. Some people who are currently using these bats are Orlando Baker, Jignesh Desai, Japen Patel and a few others.

You will probably struggle to get hold of Zafar as he only communicates mainly via email. It might take him 3-5 days to get back to you but his bats are good enough to wait for a few days.

More pics to follow in the next post.

Some pictures of my new cricket bats

Just thought i would give you a sneak peak at some of my new cricket bats. all of these will be going up against each other in my next edition of the cricket bat face off. The Lekka RDX big hitter and the Crictech Mellet Signature still need to be oiled and knocked but we will see how this all goes over the next few weeks.

So the Bats in the pictures are the

Lekka RDX big hitter.

Next one on the list is the Lekka RDX Envy cricket bat

Also in there is The Crictech Mellet Signature custom cricket bat.

Also in that pack is the USSZ custom made from Zafar Asim in L.A.

And last but certainly not least is my current bat, the Vindico Genghis players + cricket bat

So as you can see there are some awesome bats there and i look forward to having a go with them.

The Bat-off!!

So, was looking around at a few of the bats i have in my store this morning and saw a few of them had very similar profiles. namely the Gray Nicolls legend cricket bat. The Vindico Geronimo players +. The Malik Bubber Sher cricket bat and the CA LE 12000 + TRD cricket bats.

I was thinking of ways that i could compare these bats on a level playing field so i came up with a rating system i think is fare and wont upset to many people.

The rating system goes something like this.

# 1. Price. rated out of 10 points. $600 is to expensive regardless of quality. $300 is a perfect price if the bat is good. $100 is generally a low quality bat so even if the bat is $100 it wont necessarily get a good grade unless its exceptionally good. eg. GN legend scores a 4/10 on price. its an awesome bat but $500 is a lot of money. Bat makers should be finding ways to keep their price lower, not making bats more and more expensive.

#2. Willow. Rated out of 10 points. This is a grade for the overall willow quality and aesthetics. overall look, grains, knots, butterflies, watermarks etc.

#3. Overall finish. Rated out of 10 points. did the bat maker take time to make the bat look pretty. Do you want to frame the bat its so beautiful or you dont mind throwing it in your kit unprotected.

#4. Performance. Rated out of 10 points. will this bat perform well. does it have a good balance and pickup. does it pick up light or does it feel bottom heavy or off balance.

#5. Wow factor. Rated out of 5 points. When you open up the box or show it to your friends are you going to think ” wow ” or does it just look like one of the other millions of bats that are produced every single year.

#6. Moisture content. Rated out of 5 points. Generally speaking a good moisture content is 12% but have found here in america that 9% is more realistic as bats have to travel a long way to get here. who knows what bats go through during the shipping process. The GN legend is on average about 9% so thats a good benchmark. Some Matrrixx bats have measured 2% so thats the other end of the scale and not where you want to be for sure. Ive also only made it worth 5 point because there is a margin for error and this is not an exact science. it is important however and thats why we have added it to the rating system.

So the perfect score is 50/50 and ive rated all these bats according to this scale.

First up here are some side by side pics to show you the bats are all very similar in shape, design, weight etc.

The GN Legend cricket bat. 2lbs 10oz ( Buy Now, click here )

Score :

1: price. 4/10

2: willow. 9/10

3: finish. 9/10

4: performance. 9/10

5: wow. 4/5

6: moisture. 4/5

Final score. 39/50

Comments. The GN legend cricket bat is an awesome bat. Great balance. superb quality. One of the best bats money can buy. But thats where the problem is. $495 USD. thats a lot of money. If you want and AUS version you will be paying around $700 USD. Thats just craziness so on the price point it loses some points. Im not saying its not worth that money. just saying its a bit expensive for the average joe like you or me.

Vindico Geronimo Players + cricket bat. 2lbs 14oz. ( Buy Now, click here )

Score :

1: price. 7/10

2: willow. 7/10

3: finish. 7/10

4: performance. 9/10

5: wow. 4/5

6: moisture. 4/5

Final score. 38/50

Comments. The Vindico Geronimo players + cricket bat is a good quality, solid cricket bat. Its performance outways its initial impression. I have been working closely with Vindico cricket to get there overall quality and finish up to scratch but there is no denying the raw power of these cricket bats. originating from the BAS and RNS factories in India, Vindico have a dedicated bat maker pushing out very limited numbers of quality cricket bats which allows them to make sure they only select quality performance willow. The ping and value for shots are incredible. The price point of $350 is a fantastic place to be as you get the same value for shots as the $495 Legend or the $399 GM original cricket bats.

CA 12000 Plus L.E. TRD cricket bat. 2lbs 9oz (Buy Now, click here )

Score :

1: price. 6/10

2: willow. 9/10

3: finish. 9/10

4: performance. 8/10

5: wow. 4/5

6: moisture. 4/5

Final score. 40/50

Comments. Very impressed with the CA. Probably better quality willow than the GN legend. The grains are 12 evenly spaced, perfectly straight grains. somehow just about every single CA TRD looks exactly the same. i dont know how they do it. James Laver would be happy to press this bat im sure. The grain structure is perfect. The ping however was not quite there as it was on the Legend and the Geronimo but the moisture content was great so it still scored well on the performace scale. With a little oil and some knocking in this is a top performer and thats the reason , along with a good price point of $379  in my opinion scores a 40/50 points.

The Malik Bubber Sher cricket bat. 2lbs 12oz. (Buy Now, click here )

Score :

1: price. 9/10

2: willow. 7/10

3: finish. 7/10

4: performance. 6/10

5: wow. 4/5

6: moisture. 2/5

Final score. 35/50

Comments. People come back year after year for a new Bubber Sher. There is no doubting its a great bat. The performance is there. The price point is incredible at $219. Free shipping inside the USA also makes it more attractive. Malik definitely know what they are doing. It scores low on the moisture meter at 5% which is a bit worrisome. But not the end of the world cos at $219 you can afford to buy another if this one happens to break. Make sure you put 3 coats of oil on it before knocking in and you should be good to go. The grain structure is not perfect and its not the best looking bat. But when someone hits you for a 6 with their bubber sher, no one is complaining about how wobbly the grains are.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little Bat-Off with these 4 awesome cricket bats. please head to my Facebook page ( cricket store online ) for all the pics from todays blog.

Some interesting info.

Edges

CA = 36mm

GN = 36mm

Vindico = 36mm

Sher = 34mm
